The Damaged Clarice Cliff Database
quote:
Why?

Too many pieces of Clarice Cliff are being sold as undamaged and unrestored when they have been repaired or restored.

Why does that matter?

Undamaged, unrestored pieces are worth more. When someone sells a repaired or restored piece as perfect they are misleading the buyer in order make greater profits.

How will this help?

The database will document damaged pieces. As each piece of Clarice Cliff is handpainted and therefore unique, that should allow buyers to identify a piece even after restoration.

Is restoration a bad thing?

No. It is wonderful to see a damaged piece restored to its former glory. It is undeclared restoration that is undesirable.

As a collector, what use is the DCCD to me?

Imagine you were planning to buy a piece of Clarice Cliff. The seller cannot give you any assurances about its provenance or whether it has been restored. One of the precautions you could take would be to check the DCCD to see if the piece was recorded as damaged and/or restored. However, at this early stage, with so few pieces recorded, the DCCD will only prove to be useful to a few of the many buyers.
To contribute images to 'The Damaged Clarice Cliff Database' send details of the damaged piece, with images attached, to damagedclaricecliff@ntlworld.com.
They may contact you for more details if required.
